Emergency Management Professionalisation Scheme

Certification Application & Fees

Before You Apply

All applications for certification must be supported by your organisation. Before starting an application, check whether your organisation will support your application and can provide the required endorsement.

You should also review the Professional Standards for the certified role you wish to apply for and ensure you can demonstrate the required training, experience and capabilities before submitting an application.

Eligibility Requirements

To become certified, applicants must demonstrate that they meet the relevant Professional Standards for the role. Typically, this includes:

  • Completion of the required training and qualifications.
  • Significant experience performing the role.
  • Evidence demonstrating capability against the relevant Professional Standards.
  • Support from your employing organisation.
  • References from senior practitioners familiar with your experience and performance.

Certification is designed for experienced practitioners operating in roles involving high levels of consequence, responsibility and complexity.

Application Process

Step 1: Choose Your Role

Review the Certified Roles and select the role for which you are seeking certification. Ensure you understand the requirements and capabilities outlined in the relevant Professional Standards before commencing your application.

Step 2: Prepare Your Portfolio

Applicants are responsible for assembling a portfolio of evidence demonstrating that they meet the relevant Professional Standards. Evidence may include qualifications, operational experience, leadership examples and supporting documentation.

Step 3: Obtain Organisational Support

Applications must be endorsed by your organisation before proceeding through the certification process.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Contact EMPS to obtain the relevant certification application form and submit your completed application and supporting evidence for review.

Step 5: Panel Interview

Applicants whose submission demonstrates compliance with the relevant Professional Standards will be invited to attend an interview with a panel of experienced Certified practitioners. At least one member of the interview panel will be a member of the EMPS Panel.

Step 6: Assessment and Outcome

The panel assesses the applicant’s portfolio and interview against the Professional Standards. Successful applicants will be awarded certification. Applicants who do not yet meet the required standard will be provided with guidance for future development.

Additional Certified Roles

You may hold certification in more than one role where Professional Standards have been established and the relevant requirements have been met. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements must be maintained for each certified role.

Ongoing Obligations

Certified practitioners agree to:

  • Complete annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
  • Comply with the EMPS Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain any applicable fees where required.
